The family has just moved to an old farmhouse in a new town, where the only good thing seems to be Miri's ten-sided attic bedroom. Miri is the non-twin child in a family with two sets of them-older brothers and younger sisters. A great book. From New York Times bestselling author of the Ivy and Bean series and blockbuster The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society comes a sweet and charming time travel story. I am also infinitely grateful that it portrays an 11-year old girl (a girl, above all) who is smart, courageous, bold, and caring, who does everything right and achieves a great victory. I think the author must be a truly remarkable person. But I was also moved by the sensitivity of its perceptions of the world and the depth of the nuances of the story. It is first of all a thriller, and a real page turner.

I just finished it, and I feel stunned by the power of the story. Instead, she said, "The Magic Half." I was a little surprised, but decided to read it myself. The other night I asked her, what was her favorite book in the last year? I thought she would mention one of the Magic Treehouse books. Several months passed before my daughter got around to reading it. While looking for other Ivy and Bean books on the web, I saw a review of the Magic Half, and it sounded good, so I ordered it, too. We ran into Annie Barrows' books first through the Ivy and Bean series, of which my daughter read all in print. We spent a month in Italy this summer, and before we went I bought twenty books, mostly Newberry award winners, and shipped them there so she would have some English language reading matter. She has probably read over a hundred books in the last year.

I've tried to get her to branch out, so I've bought her other books, too, including classics. She loved them, read several of them many times, and carried them around with her for some time. She especially liked the Magic Treehouse books, so I bought her (over time) all of them (more than forty). So I've been looking for books for her over the last couple of years, checking out libraries, web sites, etc. Luckily for us our daughter, aged 7, likes to read.
